Today is International Day of Charity — a United Nations observance held every September 5th as a reminder that even small acts of generosity add up to lasting impact. At Nossa Familia, giving back isn't a once-a-year gesture. It's been part of who we are since we opened our doors in Portland in 2004.
International Day of Charity is a United Nations observance held every September 5th, established by the UN General Assembly to encourage individuals, businesses, and organizations everywhere to get involved in charitable and volunteer work — whether that's through direct giving, community partnerships, or simply choosing to support brands that put purpose alongside profit. For us, coffee has always been the vehicle for that. Every bag we roast is an opportunity to fund something bigger than the cup in your hands.
Coffee as a Tool for Giving Back
Since 2004, Nossa Familia has used coffee as a platform for community investment — funding educational opportunities, supporting environmental initiatives, and backing nonprofit organizations both here in Oregon and in the coffee-growing regions we source from. As a Certified B Corporation, we hold ourselves to a higher standard: measuring impact on people and planet, not just profit. You can see exactly how we track that in our 2025 B Corp Report.
That commitment shows up most directly in our giveback coffees — blends where a portion of every sale goes straight to a cause.
Where Your Purchase Goes
Transparency matters to us, so here's the real number: in 2025, Nossa Familia donated $26,775 through our giveback coffee program alone. Here's how it broke down:
-
66% — Full Cycle Coffee, benefiting bike-focused social impact organizations
-
13.3% — Juneteenth giving, supporting Black United Fund of Oregon (read more in Celebrate Juneteenth with Coffee, Community & Giving Back)
-
9.2% — Next Generation Roast, supporting De la Gente
-
6.7% — Delícia do Brasil, funding Kiva microloans
-
4.8% — Festa Holiday Blend
Every one of these is funded the same way: a portion of what you already pay for coffee you'd be drinking anyway. No extra cost, no special ask — just a purchase that does double duty. You can see the full picture of our community partnerships and request a donation for your own cause on our Give page, and learn more about our certification on our B Corp Certification page.
Meet the Giveback Coffees: Full Cycle & Delícia do Brasil
Full Cycle is our signature blend — a balance of chocolate and caramel with a bright fruit finish, medium roast. Fifty cents of every bag sold supports The Street Trust and the Community Cycling Center, two Portland nonprofits working to make cycling accessible to everyone. You can read the story behind it in Full Cycle: Our Signature Blend with a Mission.
Delícia do Brasil is a sweet, chocolaty, low-acidity medium roast from our family's farm in the Cerrado region of Brazil. Fifty cents of every bag purchased helps fund Kiva microloans for small-business owners in coffee-growing communities — a program run through our Employee Giving Committee.
Together, these two coffees are some of the clearest examples of what "coffee that gives back" actually looks like at Nossa Familia: great flavor, real transparency, and a direct line from your purchase to a cause.
If you're looking for a simple way to mark International Day of Charity, choosing coffee that gives back is a genuinely easy place to start. Grab a bag of Full Cycle or Delícia do Brasil, and know that your morning cup is quietly funding bike infrastructure, microloans, and community programs across Oregon and beyond. And if you want that impact to happen automatically, our Coffee Club subscribers save 20%, get early access to limited releases, and never have to think twice about restocking their giveback coffee of choice.
