At Nossa Familia Coffee, we believe great coffee starts with great relationships.
While many coffee companies purchase coffee through multiple intermediaries, we take a different approach. As a farm-direct coffee roaster, we work closely with the farmers who grow our coffee, building long-term partnerships that support quality, sustainability, and transparency throughout the supply chain.
But what exactly does farm-direct coffee mean, and why does it matter?
Farm-Direct Coffee vs. Fair Trade Coffee
Fair Trade has helped bring important conversations about pricing and ethics into the coffee industry. But farm-direct relationships can go even deeper.
Because we work closely with producers, we are able to pay prices that often go above Fair Trade minimums and reflect the quality, care, and work behind each coffee.

More Than a Transaction: Building Relationships with Coffee Farmers
For us, sourcing coffee isn't simply about purchasing green coffee beans.
We regularly visit our producer partners to learn about their farms, understand the challenges they face, and explore opportunities to support their future growth.
One of those relationships is with Estela, CEO of La Familia del Café in Guatemala, one of our longtime producing partners. During a recent origin trip, we had the opportunity to visit her farm and learn firsthand about her family's work, their commitment to quality, and the future they're building together. Stories like Estela's remind us that farm-direct coffee is ultimately about people.
Watch our visit with Estela:
Our visit with Estela, CEO of La Familia del Café, during our 2026 origin trip to Guatemala.
These visits help us better understand:
- Farming practices
- Harvest conditions
- Processing methods
- Sustainability initiatives
- Community impact projects
Most importantly, they allow us to build genuine relationships with the people behind every coffee we roast.
Why Farm-Direct Coffee Matters
Farm-direct sourcing benefits everyone involved in the coffee supply chain.
Traditionally, coffee passes through several stages before reaching your cup—including producers, exporters, importers, roasters, and retailers. As explained by the National Coffee Association, each step plays an important role in moving coffee from origin to consumer. You can learn more about the coffee supply chain here:

By building direct, long-term relationships with producers, farm-direct coffee helps create greater transparency, stronger communication, and shared success throughout that supply chain.
For farmers, it creates greater stability and predictable demand. Long-term purchasing relationships allow producers to plan for the future, invest in quality improvements, and continue innovating.
For coffee roasters, it provides deeper insight into how coffee is grown, harvested, and processed, allowing us to source coffees that truly reflect the care and craftsmanship behind every harvest.
And for coffee drinkers, it offers greater transparency and confidence in where their coffee comes from and the relationships that made it possible.
Every cup tells a story—not only about flavor, but about the people who grew it, harvested it, and helped bring it from farm to cup.
Paying Above Fair Trade Prices
One common question we hear is whether farm-direct coffee is the same as Fair Trade coffee.
The short answer is no.
Fair Trade is a certification system designed to help improve working conditions and provide producers with a guaranteed minimum price for their coffee, along with additional social premiums that can be invested back into farming communities. You can learn more about Fair Trade standards through Fairtrade International:
https://www.fairtrade.net
Farm-direct coffee, on the other hand, isn't a certification. Instead, it's a sourcing model built on direct, long-term relationships between coffee producers and roasters. While there is no single definition or governing organization, many specialty coffee companies use farm-direct partnerships to create greater transparency, encourage collaboration, and reward exceptional quality.
Researchers at Cornell University have also highlighted the importance of relationship-based agricultural supply chains in creating long-term resilience and sustainability for producers:

While both models aim to support producers, farm-direct relationships often allow us to pay prices that exceed Fair Trade minimums. Because we work directly with producers and focus on quality-driven partnerships, pricing can better reflect the true value of exceptional coffee.
By working directly with producers, we can invest in relationships that support:
-
Farm improvements
-
Worker support
-
Sustainability initiatives
-
Quality-focused processing methods
-
Experimental microlots and innovation
Ultimately, this relationship-driven approach helps create exceptional coffee while supporting stronger farming businesses and healthier coffee-growing communities for the long term.
Collaboration Beyond Coffee
One of the most rewarding aspects of farm-direct sourcing is the opportunity to collaborate.
Many of our producer partners work with us on special projects, experimental lots, and unique microlot coffees.
These collaborations allow farmers to explore new processing methods while giving coffee drinkers access to exciting and distinctive flavor experiences.
A great example is our recent release of Slow Jam Coffee developed through years of experimentation at Finca San Jerónimo Miramar in Guatemala.
The result is a coffee that pushes the boundaries of traditional processing while highlighting the creativity and innovation of our producer partners.

Farm-Direct Coffee and Sustainability
Strong relationships also support long-term sustainability.
When producers know they have reliable buyers and roasters know they have trusted farming partners, both sides can invest confidently in the future.
Many of the farmers we work with are implementing:
-
Regenerative agriculture practices
-
Water conservation programs
-
Shade-grown coffee production
-
Biodiversity initiatives
