"Progress and impact are in many ways defined by how they are measured and communicated. We've found that a Sustainability Report is a great way to capture and share those stories," said Augusto Carneiro, Founder & Chief Friendship Officer at Nossa Familia. "Producing this report helps us see where we are as a company, and where we still have yet to go. One of my mantras in business and life is ‘Progress, not perfection.’ We hope to make progress as a company and as individuals, and to chart that progress year after year. While we won't ever be perfect, we can try our best to be better people, and a company that is good for the world."

The primary audience for the reports are Nossa Familia’s staff, close partners and customers, especially its wholesale clients who serve Nossa Familia Coffee. The company also hopes to share the report with its current and prospective café and online customers. The company is privately owned and not required to produce a public-facing annual report, doing so voluntarily as a way to spread a message in line with the B Corp mantra of "People Using Business as a Force for Good." Nossa Familia produced its first-ever sustainability report in early 2017, covering the 2016 calendar year. The newly-released report focuses on the 2018 calendar year, as well as covering ongoing initiatives at the company.

"Producing our first report in 2017 was a learning process, and we wanted to dig even deeper this time around to tell more of the stories around our company initiatives and partnerships, " said Karen Lickteig, Nossa Familia's Marketing & Sustainability Director, who oversaw production of the report. "The report is set up like a magazine or photo book, and our goal was for it to be visually compelling and versatile. We wanted to make it appealing simply to flip through and look at beautiful photos and quick infographics, and also to make something that one could dive into, sit down and read a few meaningful stories about our impact. Our company has deep, complex stories to tell, and we wanted to make sure we're honoring the hard work of our farmers, partners, and team in this report."

Nossa Familia Coffee was founded in 2004 by Augusto Carneiro, a Brazilian native who began the company solely sourcing and selling roasted coffee from his family's farms in Brazil. Since then, the company has expanded to include a diverse coffee lineup from other countries, such as Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, Kenya, and more. The company roasts and distributes coffee from its roastery in Northwest Industrial Portland to its own four cafes--three in Portland and one in Los Angeles--as well as its other wholesale clients. Nossa Familia beans can be found on offer locally at over 100 different businesses, including New Seasons Market stores, Grand Central Bakery, and Petite Provence. The company became a Certified B Corporation in 2016, certifying its commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
