Earth Day Oregon x The Street Trust

Happy Earth Month!

In honor of Earth Month and in partnership with Earth Day Oregon, we’re donating 50¢ of every bag of Full Cycle coffee you buy to The Street Trust (TST) to support their work advocating for low carbon, multimodal transportation options that prioritize safety, accessibility, equity, and climate justice in the Portland Metro Region.

Earth Day Oregon

What is Earth Day Oregon?

Earth Day Oregon is a statewide collaboration between sustainably-minded businesses, like Nossa Familia, and nonprofits, like The Street Trust, teaming up to amplify the impact of Earth Day. In 2021, 171 Oregon businesses donated over $205,000 to Oregon nonprofits who work everyday to advance the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals for a healthier planet today and into the future.

Why is The Street Trust involved in an Earth Day Campaign?

Climate Justice Means Transportation Justice
The role of transport in sustainable development was first recognized at the 1992 UN Earth Summit and reinforced in its outcome document – Agenda 21 to advance a sustainable planet. Climate justice means transportation justice, particularly for communities lacking access to safe routes. The Street Trust advocates for policy transformation and major investments to save lives, reduce barriers, and expand infrastructure to marginalized people and neighborhoods neglected by failings in the existing transportation system. Their vision for safe streets, supporting multimodal transportation, improves the air we breathe, keeps families safer, supports outdoor activity, reduces carbon emissions and helps connect people to jobs and critical services.

Supporting Frontline Communities
The Street Trust serves the Portland Metro Region through community events and public school efforts, and by partnering with existing nonprofits and businesses. Forging partnerships across sectors and regions, they’re able to extend their reach to serve priority communities in Washington, Clackamas and Multnomah Counties. In the City of Portland, TST points to data showing that 76% of pedestrian fatalities have occurred in communities where more people of color, English as a second language and low income people live. TST recognizes that “communities that have been historically excluded need to be leading our future transportation decisions.”

#Our Streets
In 2022, through their #Our Streets campaign TST will partner with businesses and nonprofits supporting frontline communities to conduct listening sessions and events to build a community mapping project called the #OurStreets scorecard. The scorecard will evaluate traffic safety, travel options for people of all abilities and incomes, disparities created from racist history of transportation, and community efforts to reduce harmful emissions. Using data and storytelling these scorecards will help decision-makers further identify areas for action to create healthy streets for everyone in the region.

The Street Trust

Creating a transportation future that is equitable and sustainable is at the heart of TST’s vision.

TST Climate Justice Goals include:

  • Reducing vehicle miles traveled
  • Reducing congestion through improving use of non-auto modes and implementation of equitable road pricing policy
  • Supporting the use of travel options with a lower greenhouse gas impact
  • Increasing tree canopy, with a focus on communities most impacted by climate deterioration

Through the Nossa Familia Giveback Program we make financial contributions and donate coffee to nonprofits that are working to alleviate poverty and improve the livelihood of people locally and in coffee growing countries. Since Nossa Familia's inception in 2004 we’ve contributed nearly $180,000 in cash and over $300,000 in kind to nonprofits and charitable causes supporting communities, youth, and the environment.
