Coffee & Knives: Nossa Familia Coffee Meets STEELPORT Craftsmanship

Coffee & Knives: Nossa Familia Coffee Meets STEELPORT Craftsmanship

What do specialty coffee and handcrafted kitchen knives have in common?

More than you might think.

Here in Portland, coffee and craftsmanship are both part of the city’s DNA. And our latest local collaboration brings the two together in a way we never expected: coffee is being used as part of the knifemaking process at STEELPORT Knife Co.

Yes, you read that right. Coffee isn’t just fueling the people making the knives. It’s helping finish the knives themselves.

When Portland Coffee Meets Portland Craftsmanship

STEELPORT Knife Co. handcrafts American-forged carbon steel kitchen knives right here in Portland, Oregon. Each knife is made by hand using American-sourced materials and a process that combines traditional knifemaking techniques with modern innovation. STEELPORT Knife Co.

At Nossa Familia, we know a thing or two about craft, too. From the relationships behind the coffee we source to roasting each batch here in Portland, coffee is a product shaped by people, place, and attention to detail.

That shared appreciation for craft is what makes this local collaboration such a natural fit.

But the most interesting connection between our two worlds might be the coffee itself.

Because at STEELPORT, coffee has a job to do.

Wait... How Does Coffee Help Make a Knife?

One of the final steps in STEELPORT’s knifemaking process involves creating a patina on its carbon steel blades.

A patina is a controlled layer of oxidation that develops on materials such as carbon steel. In addition to creating the distinctive dark finish seen on STEELPORT knives, the process helps protect the blade and reveals characteristics of the steel that can be inspected as part of quality control.

And this is where coffee enters the story.

Instead of relying solely on conventional chemical etchants, STEELPORT developed a process that uses strongly brewed hot coffee to force the initial patina on its carbon steel blades.

According to STEELPORT, the blades are submerged in coffee brewed to a strength similar to espresso and steeped for less than an hour before being rinsed and dried. The process helps create uniform protection and the rich, dark finish characteristic of a new STEELPORT blade..

So yes: your morning coffee and an heirloom-quality kitchen knife have at least one very unexpected thing in common.

Why Coffee?

Before landing on coffee, STEELPORT experimented with natural ingredients including vinegar, mustard, lemon juice, and wine to find an alternative to commonly used chemical etchants.

Coffee delivered the result they were looking for.

For STEELPORT, using coffee for the forced patina helps:

  • provide an initial layer of protection for the carbon steel blade;
  • reveal details that help verify the heat-treatment process;
  • create the knife’s rich, distinctive finish;
  • use a natural material as part of the etching process; and
  • give coffee another purpose beyond the cup.

That last point especially caught our attention.

We spend a lot of time thinking about the full journey of coffee—from the people who grow it to the way it is roasted, brewed, enjoyed, and ultimately used. Finding coffee playing an entirely different role in another Portland maker’s craft feels right at home in that story.

Nossa Familia Coffee, Put to Work

For this collaboration, bags of Nossa Familia coffee made their way into the STEELPORT workshop—and the photos tell the story better than we ever could.

And naturally, Full Cycle feels especially at home here.

EXPLORE FULL CYCLE

Full Cycle represents our belief in considering the entire journey of coffee, from farm to cup and the relationships formed along the way. It is also one of our giveback coffees: since 2015, 50¢ from every bag purchased has supported nonprofits working to make communities better through bicycles. Nossa Familia Coffee

Now we can add another unexpected stop to coffee’s journey: the knifemaking workshop.

Two Portland Makers, One Shared Appreciation for Craft

The more we learned about how STEELPORT makes its knives, the more familiar the philosophy felt.

STEELPORT describes its approach as “Craftsmanship Without Compromise.” Its knives are handcrafted locally in Portland from American-sourced materials, with individual attention given to each blade. STEELPORT Knife Co.

Coffee is obviously a very different craft, but many of the values translate.

Great coffee doesn’t happen by accident. Neither does a great knife.

Both depend on the quality of the raw material. Both require people who understand their craft. Both are shaped by countless small decisions along the way. And both become part of everyday rituals—whether that’s brewing the first cup of the morning or preparing dinner for the people you love.

Maybe coffee and knives weren’t such an unusual pairing after all.

Made in Portland, Made with Purpose

One of our favorite things about being a Portland company is getting to work alongside other local makers who care deeply about what they create.

This collaboration gave us the chance to see Nossa Familia coffee outside the café, outside the roastery, and even outside the coffee cup—playing a small but fascinating role in another Portland craft.

From coffee farms to our Portland roastery, and from the STEELPORT workshop to kitchens around the country, there are a lot of hands behind the things we use every day.

And sometimes, two of those stories intersect in the most unexpected way.

Coffee and knives? Turns out they make a pretty sharp pair.
